Life Liberty & Bondage

Jesus’s formula for a happy, fulfilling and successful life was to ‘let the wind carry1 you away.’ That’s how Jesus said we were to live. It was His way of saying follow your dreams and never let anything enslave or oppress you. Our cities have become asphalt jungles thronging with lives of drudgery and oppression, pills and disillusion, sickness and endless desperation. Is it destiny or has God appointed us to something much superior? Regardless of how much material wealth a slave amasses, fulfilment remains and evasive illusion. Happiness and freedom are mutually inseparable. Freedom is the highest birthright. Man is either born free or born a slave. God has destined every man to undergo two births, birth of a woman into the earth and birth of the Spirit into heaven, and a heavenly life. ~ “He who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh…which gives birth to bondage [slavery]; the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (Galatians 4.23-31, John 3.6).

The Fight of Freedom

Freedom must begin in the spirit. As long as spiritual bondage has the ascendency, there can be no freedom. However, true liberty is runs much deeper than a spiritual beginning. Too often God’s children, having been born of the Spirit, unwittingly succumb to lives of oppression and bondage. Just as a man may be born free and later taken into bondage, so also freedom must be assertively pursued and defended. A gratifying life has a cost. It doesn’t just happen on its own. There are slaves, prostitutes, and freemen. A freeman lives out his dream; a prostitute may have been born free but now lives out someone else’s dream, of course, for money. Slaves get paid for what they do; patriots get paid for who they are. They are inherently rich because they are the mother of invention. They are the dreamers, who may suffer want for a while, but eventually make themselves and the world around them rich because regardless the cost, they insist on being born by the wind of the Spirit until their dreams come true.

Work & Slavery

Man was created in the image2 of God, and there is not a molecule of serfdom in God’s image. Adam and Eve spent all of their time chasing dreams. They never worked6 a day in their lives until they sinned and was evicted out of Eden. The point is are you chasing your dreams or banging away helping someone else chase theirs. Do you love what you do or do what you hate? Are you living or existing? Is it fear or faith? Do you love your life or hate and loathe most of it? Instead of getting a job maybe it’s time for you to consider getting life. The Bible describes the man who has been swept out of bondage by winds of the Spirit and into a life of satisfaction and fulfillment. ~ “For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps [him] busy with the joy of his heart” (Ecclesiastes 5.20). Like God, a large of your being is a creative nature, which fills your days with joy and happiness. Are you an artist or a laborer? Is your work ‘the joy of your heart’ or an endless bane and a nightmare? It all comes down to why you do what you do. Is your livelihood like the hooker who drudgingly performs for money, or is it like the artist who lives and breathes to paint? Do you paint to live or live to paint!

Life is Killing Them

Fear has never released a slave, insomuch as every success story has been born and sustained by faith alone. It is ‘life’ that is killing them, if it could be called ‘a life.’ Fear has brought them into lives of drudgery and despair, gloomy mornings and nights of endless darkness, where there is rarely a ray of joy and real happiness. Such is the life of the hustler, who hires out her body, mind and soul for pennies, instead of launching out into her deep dreams, carried only on the gilded winds of the Spirit. The street-walker is morally bankrupt and works the streetcorner for fear of lack. The disciple of little8 faith is spiritually bankrupt and works a nine-to-five job that he hates for fear of lack. There is no pimp more ruthless than fear. Fear will always enslave and oppress; therefore, it must be identified, relentlessly attacked and absolutely eradicated from the human spirit. ~ “Release those who through fear…were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption.” (Hebrews 2.15, Romans 8.15).

It’s Time to Live Again

God is love,3 and love demands perfect freedom. True love will always make you free inasmuch as faith will always make you free. They are part5 and parcel of each other. Love and faith always work together, and liberty is indelible to both of them. Complete and constant liberty is absolutely uncompromised, unnegotiable and unending in God’s presence. In fact, it is the first and primary of law of the Kingdom of God. He unapologetically calls it ‘the perfect law4 of liberty.’ The Spirit of God will always guide into the open waters of liberty and abundant fulfilment. ~ “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there [is] liberty” (2Corinthians 3.17). It’s never too late to dream again. But this time, give your dreams some wings spending time in the word of God every day, fueling7 your faith. And then don’t be surprised when you can’t get to sleep at night because the winds of the Spirit keep carrying you into a brighter horizon. Begin to live your dreams, and your life will be a dream come true.

John 8.36

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
