The Tree of Life

Instead of choosing the tree of life, the serpent deceived Adam and Eve to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. All of the mayhem that has been poured out upon the human race since then resulted from that fateful decision. ~ “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2.16-17). The incredible fact is, most Christians today continue to eat the forbidden fruit of tree of good and evil instead of the tree of life. They continually think, act, and live their lives according to the knowledge of the tree of good and evil instead of eating of the tree of the Spirit of life. These bewildered and beleaguered children of God still haven’t heard the words God spoke in the second chapter of the Bible. They haven’t understood the simple fact that GOOD works conduct one to hell just as fast as evil works do. ~ “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2.17).

The Purpose of Good Works

The Christian life is not about ‘doing’ good—the Christian life is about ‘being’ good. It’s about living the Spirit led life. There is an enormous difference between ‘doing’ good and ‘being’ good. The entire purpose of good works in the Bible is to demonstrate that no man can be good by his works. Good works were never designed by God to make anyone good. The New Testament states plainly the more one follows good works, the more sin he will commit. ~ “…sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment [good works] might become EXCEEDINGLY SINFUL” (Romans 7.13). The Spirit expressly says that the purpose of good works (commandments) is to make one ~ “… exceedingly sinful.” Why? So that man will understand that he cannot save himself. He needs a Savior. He needs to be transformed, born again, through Jesus Christ. The purpose of the laws and commandments to do good works in the Bible is specifically to show man that he cannot be good… he must be reborn by the Spirit of God. ~ “I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness [comes] through the law, then Christ died in vain” (Galatians 2.21).

Christ is the Tree of Eternal Life

This is why we see so many people who call themselves Christians committing horrible sins. They go to church on Sunday and are taught to eat the fruit of the tree of good and evil works instead of being taught to eat of the fruit of the tree of spiritual life. Every Sunday they receive more and more instructions about how to do good works, which only produce in them more and more sin and spiritual death. The only purpose of the law of good works in the Bible is to bring us to Christ, to teach us that we must take up our cross and die to the tree of the knowledge of good works, so we can be born again of the tree of life through the Spirit. ~ “Therefore the law was our tutor [to bring us] to Christ, that we might be justified by faith…knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified” (Galatians 3.24,2.16).

Cast the Serpent Out of Your Garden

The prophets of the Old Testament call Jesus ‘a¹ tree.’ Only Jesus gives all who come to Him access again to the tree of eternal life. The problem is that the few Christians who are actually3 born again, do not remain in communion with the anointed Word of God and are, therefore, “… cast out as a branch.” They were born of the Spirit but did not remain in the word of the tree of life. Instead, they went back to eating the poisonous fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. Jesus, the word2 of God, is the Vine, the tree of Life. He said ~ “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw [them] into the fire, and they are burned” (John 15.1,6). Once one eats of the tree (word) of life, he no longer sins because he is born of the Spirit of God and cannot sin; therefore, the knowledge of good and evil is completely irrelevant to him. He has been born of God and now has the sinless nature4 of God as long as the Seed of the Word remains in him or as long as he abides in the anointed (Spirit-filled) word of God. Don’t let the serpent deceive you. Stop eating of the tree of good and evil and begin to partake of the tree of the Life today.

1 John 3:9

Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
