The Meaning of Miracles

Don’t lose your healing miracle by failing to understand the meaning of the miracle that God has blessed you with. Most people just take what they can get and run, but Jesus insisted that His disciples not only discerned when a miracle had taken place, but also understood the meaning of each miracle. The Gospel of Mark says ~ “For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened” (Mark 6.52).

Religious Doctrine Destroys the Heart

All of God’s miracles are done to teach men more about the nature of God and the method of God’s dealings with the children of men. The miracle dinner in the desert for the five thousand people who had followed Jesus far out of the city to hear Him preach is rich with hidden Revelation. Notwithstanding, before the meaning of the miracle is addressed, it is important to understand what the Bible teaches about the hardening of the hearts of the twelve apostles. Jesus said that they could not understand the things of the spiritual realm because their hearts were hardened by listening to the religious doctrine of the Jewish priests. ~ “But Jesus, being aware of [it], said to them… “Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? Then they understood that He did not tell [them] to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees” (Matthew 16.8,9,12).

Real Hunger for the Word

It is interesting to note that today, just as it was 2000 years ago, the very place people go to learn about God is actually the place that is blocking their ability to comprehend the things of God. The first lesson that the miracle feeding of the five thousand teaches is that God does miracle for those who sacrifice to hear His word. Let’s look at the book of Mark ~ “So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves. And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things” (Mark 6.32,34). These were not those who just attended the closest church to their home or continued hearing religious doctrine simply because they didn’t want to leave and hurt someone’s feelings. No, these were serious hearted believers. They were willing to walk for miles out into a desert without food to hear Jesus preach. Undoubtedly, this was a prime motive why Jesus performed such an astounding miracle for them.

The Meaning of a Miracle

Next, various attributes of hearing God’s word are revealed. The number ‘five thousand’ reveals that the word of God, when preached by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, is capable of satiating the spiritual needs of innumerable multitudes of people. Also, the effect of receiving the true word of God will fulfill every need of the individual who hears the word of God with faith. It is important to keep in mind that the bread symbolizes the word of God and the two fish symbolize ‘new believers.’ Jesus said to His disciples ~ “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4.19). This is where the ancient symbol of a fish comes from, which symbolizes new Christians. The miracle of multiplying 5 loaves and 2 fish tells us that whenever the word of God is preached and multiplied, new people will be born into the family of God. One must remember that bread in scripture symbolizes the word of God. Let’s look at the book of Matthew ~ “But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”’” (Matthew 4.4). The word of God when preached by the anointing of the Holy Spirit will satisfy every need in the lives of those who receive the word, by giving it first place in their lives. Look at what Jesus said about this ~ “And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6.35).

Nevermore to Hunger

Here, it is seen why the word of God, the bread, is so important and so powerful — because Jesus IS the word of God. When Jesus says they will never hunger any more, this means that when one receives the word of God, he is receiving Jesus Christ as his Lord, and the Lord Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, will supply every need of those who follow Him.  The Bible says ~ “The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23.1). In this particular case, the need was a dinner for five thousand people, which symbolizes the Word’s ability to answer every need, so that those who eat it will never hunger because they will never lack anything. ~ “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4.19).

John 21.6

And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find [some].” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.
