God is all around us all the time. He has made Himself accessible to us 24/7, yet few of His followers ever really enter into His presence. They will traverse hundreds of miles and make large expenditures to hear a conference about God, but will not take two steps to hear God. They will spend countless days reading books on God, but will not spend ten minutes in His presence. Each individual determines his relative proximity to the Father by the way he chooses to use his mind. The Bible mentions this in the Gospel of Matthew ~ “Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22.37). Most people have the idea that God gave them a mind so they could use it as their own private entertainment center or to simply make money with or to think and scheme with, but the true purpose of the mind is to get to know God as a person, to relate to Him and hear from Him, and to learn to love Him. This is the greatest mental endeavor any human being could ever hope to achieve, infinitely superior to any scientific or academic achievement.
On God’s part, He has made Himself close to each one of us. ~ “So that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17.27). The mind is the door that opens the way into the throne room of God, and our thoughts are the key that unlocks His presence into our life. The word ‘knowing’ God simply means— giving one’s mind over to God. This is all that is necessary for one to know God and for one to learn to love God. However, the simple task of mastering the presence of God in one’s life, the act of turning one’s attention/mind to God and away from worldly distractions will not go unchallenged by Satan. ~ “And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled” (Colossians 1.21). We have been reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ, yet our mind is still at war with God until it is renewed1 and brought into subjection to the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. Satan gained entrance into the mind through the sin of Adam in the Garden of Eden, and he will relentlessly exercise his access into the human mind to distract the believer away from entering into the presence of God.
The Fountainhead of Spiritual Death
The first thing we learn from the Bible is that through Adam’s compliance Satan gained legal entrance into the human mind in the garden of Eden. ~ “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2.17). Spiritual death came to the human race 6000 years ago through the mind, and little has changed to then. We inhabit a day and age where people are conditioned from birth to occupy themselves completely with the development and use of the mind at the expense of the operation and advancement of the human spirit. Believers need to understand that misguided mental wandering is the primary fountainhead of spiritual death through which the enemy squeezes every drop of spiritual life out of them, leaving them sick, weak, and spiritual blind. Everything permitted to enter and inhabit the mind impacts the spirit. ~ “For to be carnally minded [is] death, but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace” (Romans 8:6).
The Heavy Mental Lifting
Christianity in the West for the most part has indiscreetly cast aside the Bible and blindly followed the world’s masses into spiritual death by employing the mind as the cardinal reasoning faculty instead of the reborn spirit. All of the renowned men and women of scripture understood that the greatest wealth of human intelligence and reasoning does not take place in the mind; it takes place in the reborn human spirit. ~ “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23.7). The issues of life are much too profound for the mind, only with in the heart (spirit) of man can they be correctly perceived and understood. The mind is very limited. It was never designed by God to process concepts of much understanding. The mind is part of the body and was created to manage nothing more than the information transmitted by the five physical senses. God designed man to conduct all of the heavy mental lifting, the profound intellectual acumen, analysis, and interpretation to take place in the spirit of man, not his mind. The only way to live ‘in the spirit’ is through much practice to bring all of the distractions and confusion of the human mind to a place of quietness and stillness, where the voice of the spirit is given preeminence.
1 Corinthians 2.10-11
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?
