As much as the spirit of man is more profound than the body, so the heart of man experiences unspeakable pleasure or torment beyond that which words can express. Most of the world’s attention and resources is focused on physical comfort, while little or nothing is directed to the real state of his being, his spiritual state. Fortunately, in most countries of the world, the basic material needs of the earth’s seven billion inhabitants have been met. Physical suffering is at its lowest level in history, while spiritual anguish and disillusion soars continually to new all-time highs. No one knows this better than the pharmaceutical giants whose dividends continue to rocket to new highs fueled by the ever expanding sale of anxiety meds.
The Grieving Masses
According to a report released by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the rate of antidepressant use in the USA increased by almost 400% between 1988–2008. People are hurting at the most profound level. They are hurting inside where the pain is overwhelming, and too often devastating. The rising suicide rate bears witness to this grim fact, having risen some 30% between 2000-2016. The bible unequivocally states that spiritual suffering is far worse than physical suffering. ~ “The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?” (Proverbs 18.14). God is love and He has not turned a blind eye to the grieving cries of the world’s masses. On the contrary, God has addressed the issue of spiritual suffering at the highest possible level, commissioning none other than the third member of the divine godhead, the Holy Spirit, to bring divine comfort and healing to the core of man´s wounded and broken spirit. ~ “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, the Holy Spirit, that he may abide with you for ever” (John 14.16,26).
The Comfort Zone
There is nothing on earth, in the universe, or in heaven itself that compares to the marvelous ministry of the Comforter. The best kept secret of Christianity is this hidden treasure that delights the heart with the inexpressible pleasures of divine joy and “the peace1 of God, which surpasses all understanding.” For centuries the world’s greatest leaders have searched to find what the driving force of Christianity was… what exactly it is that motivates believers regardless of their place in life to remain steadfast in faith, but it was beyond their grasp. Only experience itself can accurately describe the indescribable. It is the human reaction to being in the presence of God that keeps believers all over the globe coming back for more and willing to forfeit all for this priceless extravagance. ~ “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence [is] fullness of joy; At Your right hand [are] pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16.11). If contentment, happiness, and peace could be synthetically produced and sold on the market, it would undoubtedly be the costliest and most sought after substance on earth. All wars would end. All violence and hatred would cease. There would be no more abandoned children on the street, no more infidelity in the home, and no more depression and brokenness in the workplace.
The Power of Love
The discomfort of a physical wound can only be relieved by physical intervention. The torture of a broken spirit can only be healed by spiritual intervention. Man is a spirit-being held within a physical body, but the core of his soul is his spirit. Only in the spirit realm can he escape the barren deadness of the greed, pride, and lust that have pierced his heart through leaving him with nothing more than the memories of broken relationships and shattered love. The Holy Spirit liberates and restores man through spiritual ‘relationship,’ through administering love into his spirit and gently bathing him in the beauty of divine stillness and peace, which are products of God’s presence. King David, who had every material blessing fathomable, speaks of how the only true satisfaction in his life was spiritual. ~ “One [thing] I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple” (Psalm 27.4). The divine love of the Spirit is the only solution for man’s wounded heart, and it can only be administered via the presence of God and His family where they dwell together, in perfect communion (Church). Its time to go beyond pain and healing; its time to get comfortable, to get into the presence of the Holy Spirit. Its time to get into the comfort zone, where all is made one and one is made all.
For a day in Your courts [is] better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
